The Aomori prefecture came into existence in 1871, and is especially famous for its apple orchards. The full color obverse of the Aomori prefecture coin features apples growing above a gala scene of giant illuminated floats featuring famous warriors and kabuki actors that are paraded through the streets—as takes place every August, during the Nebuta and Neputa Festivals—which attracts three million visitors annually. More apples are grown in Aomori than in any other Japanese Prefecture, and this coin also celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Fuji apple, a major apple variety developed in Aomori.
