The Dazu Rock Carvings are a series of religious sculptures dating back as far as the 7th Century AD. The rock carvings are a World Heritage designated site, and are influenced by Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist beliefs. There are more than 50,000 statues on the protected sites which are located on steep hillsides, providing an outstanding glimpse of everyday life in China. The carvings were isolated for many years and off-limits to tourists, which helped to preserve their quality and allow them to remain unharmed during the Cultural Revolution.
