In 2006, for the first time Australias Perth Mint struck huge coins weighing 10 kilos of pure .999 fine silver commemorating the Year of the Dog. Just 173 Brilliant Uncirculated pieces were struck out of the authorized mintage of 1,000 pieces.
Again, in 2007, they issued 10 kilo pure silver coins for the Year of the Pig, minting 173 pieces. There were no 10 kilo silver coins issued in 2008 or 2009.
But the Perth Mint is again issuing these mammothnearly 9 inches diameter and over 1 ¼ inch thicksilver coins to commemorate 2010 as the Year of the Tiger. They have announced a maximum mintage of only 500 pieces. The reverse depicts a tiger lying on the ground. The Chinese character for tiger and the inscription Year of the Tiger also appear in the design with The Perth Mints traditional P mintmark. The coins obverse portrays the Ian-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination of $300.
This massive .999 fine silver coin weighs 10,000 grams or 321.5 troy ounces, equivalent to over 26.7 troy pounds!
